Herbal Medicines as Adjunctive Therapy for Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Management: a Case Report

Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is the most frequent oral cancer. The management for OSCC are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Chemotherapy radiotherapy have high toxicity side effects, therefore effort needed to reduce them. Several studies show that herbal medicines anticancer effects with lower effects. objective discuss about of using chemotherapy as adjunctive therapy. A 59-year-old man came medicine clinic complaining a painful ulcer on right tongue since 8 months ago. had been enlarged in last 3 was difficult be moved. He used pain relievers aloe vera gel but there no improvement. smoked one pack day 40 years Intraoral showed an irregular indurated endophytic mass lateral tongue. An incisional biopsy performed histopathological diagnosis poorly differentiated OSCC. patient referred oncology department advised 6 cycles per weeks. also containing Panax ginseng radix, pseudoginseng Ophiopogonis japonicus, Ganoderma lucidum, Ligusticum wallichii rhizoma, Atractylodes macrocephala rhizoma. content these immunomodulatory After second cycle significant combined can increase success therapy chemotherapy.
